The Health Insurance Portability and Transparency Act (HIPPA) is a statute that was enacted to protect the privacy and rights of individuals' personal health records. Many hospitals will issue a security number as a result of this rule, which must be displayed by all family members or visitors who wish to see a patient. This number would also enable some members of the family to receive medical updates on the patient.
